From my travel archives.Sarasota Beach, Florida. October 3rd, 1995. That there is the approaching Hurricane Opal.Opal sat in the Gulf for a few days churning up and generally looking pretty mean and was the hot topic on the Weather Channel all week. I was staying in a small hotel, right on the beach in Sarasota, and the best predictions put the hurricane making landfall slap bang dead center of Sarasota, as a category 5 hurricane…. To say the least, I was a little nervous. The night before it hit, my then girlfriend and I went to the hotel bar to find out what we were supposed to do, and the best advice seemed to be ‘drink, it won’t hit us, don’t worry’….so drink we did.It was a very noisy night and when we woke the next day the beach was 3 feet high at our room door, the roads were flooded and boats were in people’s gardens..but…the storm did divert north at the last minute and missed Sarasota with the worst of it. It did make landfall as a category 4 hurricane, so blessings were counted for sure as it could have been very very different.#hurricane #opal #florida #storm #sarasota #travel #photography #fuji #velvia #film
